Nate’s Mai Tai Recipe

If I want my insides to burn and brine as they float through a vermouth and pimento slurry, I’ll order a classic cocktail.  The classic cocktail always sounds like a good idea, but often, it leaves me disappointed or it just tastes like medicine to me. For this reason, over the years, I’ve settled for beer or wine. Nate, on the other hand, is an adventurous soul who doesn’t mind a good, stiff drink every once in a while. In fact, if we go out for drinks, I have fun guessing what he’ll order. Will it be the Blue Hawaiian or the Sidecar?

“Take a sip of the Sidecar. It has a fresh, lemon taste,” Nate once told me. So, I put down my Miller High Life and took a sip. I soon discovered that the Sidecar did indeed pull off a very sour lemon flavor, but there was an unmistakable Sucrets throat lozenge aftertaste I couldn’t swallow.

However, he once ordered a “Dark and Stormy” and I was pretty impressed when I tasted it. That drink, which consists of rum and ginger beer is spicy, sweet, and refreshing. The problem is, I can never seem to get the name right, so I end up going into bars with Nate and saying things that are beyond his control, such as, “Hey, Nate—what’s the name of that drink I like again? Yeah—now I remember: I’ll have a Stormy Daniels!”

To save me from myself, Nate has introduced me to his version of the mai tai, which sounds nothing like “Stormy Daniels,” and it doesn’t taste like medicine. I can safely order it when we go out, or stay in. Leave it to Nate to take such good care of me.

Nate’s Mai Tai Recipe:

Ingredients:

1 ½ ounces of golden rum

1 ½ ounces of Triple Sec

½ ounce of lime juice

2 ounces of pineapple/mango juice

1 tsp. of grenadine

Ice for a shaker and for a glass

Method:

Place the ice into a shaker. Pour all of the ingredients listed above into the shaker. Shake well and strain the mixture into a glass with ice. Top the drink off with grenadine.

  1. Thanks for sharing… don’t have a cocktail but later this evening I will be doing some reading on the Kindle while listening to Henry Mancini and sipping on a glass of white zinfandel and nibbling on some Focaccia Tuscan cheese crackers and pieces of mozzarella … 🙂

  2. Oooo this sounds good! I’ll bookmark this recipe. I was given a cocktail making kit as a gift the Christmas before last but will feeling too unwell to drink (the horror!) and not finding many recipes tempting, this sounds like a good one to try. I quite like places that do cheaper cocktails because they seem to fill them with sugar so they’re more palatable, but you’re right, a lot of ‘real’ ones can end up tasting pretty yucky.xx

    1. Thanks for stopping by! Yes, I’ve had some really bad drinks over the years, but I guess some drinks are just supposed to taste overpowering in some cases. I don’t understand it myself, but oh well:)

  3. I’m not really a cocktail guy, but I do love ginger beer, so a Moscow & Kentucky Mules are favorites. And I appreciate that they serve it in a copper cup, because I’m constantly dropping things, and the cups just dent instead of shattering. And a Dark & Stormy is pretty good, too. I’d like to see the bartender’s face when someone orders a “Stormy Daniels,” maybe with a penicillin chaser.

  4. I am definitely not into cocktails and I like the odd beer (Molson Canadian or MGD)
    … give me a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon (9 oz please) any day or two fingers of Dalwhinney and a splash of water periodically and I’m a happy camper! The last cocktail I remembered ordering was a Singapore Sling (around this time last year) which was in memory of my Mom, who rarely would have a drink. But she sure loved a Singapore Sling when she would have a drink!

  5. I’m so not a drinker, but I love Sex on the Beach (vodka, orange juice and cranberry juice) and Blue Lagoon (vodka, curaçao, lime juice and ice), and the occasional piña colada. If it’s alcoholic and sweet, I’ll be happy to try it. Also like a cocktail people make here with cider or champagne, condensed milk and one or several fruits – I usually order peach or strawberry. It’s VERY good, like an alcoholic dessert lol

  6. Delicious! I made one, and it was divine. I used pineapple juice.

    A lot of bars skimp on the good juice to make the drinks. And use cheap alcohol. Hence, why it tastes like medicine as is soooo much better made at home!
