If Hello Kitty and Pikachu opened a theme park, I’d expect my favorite rice cracker snacks to fall like star-shaped confetti from the sky. Or, they might be banned because of their spicy and addictive nature. Either way, I just can’t get enough of these cute and tasty treats.
The “Hot Mate” rice cracker snacks from the Shirakiku company in Japan are sweet, salty, and spicy, but they’re not for everyone. One reviewer, for example, is shocked that they taste a bit like fish. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that this snack tastes or smells like a can of sardines, but there are literally pieces of dried seaweed wrapped around a few of the pieces in the mix—and you can see this detail through the clear packaging—so one should at least expect an ocean-like after-taste, which is pretty mild. And I’m totally okay with that, especially since there’s also a splash of spice.
I mistakenly thought that because they come in large bags and are individually wrapped, it would take me at least a month to get through them, but it takes me less than a week. I find every excuse I can to eat these crackers and then go back to the one store in town that carries them. One night, I cruised the internet to find them, so they could be delivered regularly to my home, but I decided I was in dangerous territory and shut down my searches. I should probably destroy my search history as well.
For now, it’s just best to enjoy them from my local store—and hope—really, really hope—that it’s just a phase. That I’ll grow out of it someday. But someday’s not today. And I’ve got another full bag in the pantry. Oh, star and wheel-shaped bits of seaweed-wrapped in speckled goodness, rain down on me like ticker tape in a parade of fluffy cats and bunnies.
Your Turn: What’s one good thing you love right now?
I could go for some rice cracker snacks, as long as there is no wasabi involved.

Ooh–sorry. There is definitely wasabi involved, but you can find the wasabi peas and pick them out and share them with others who like them 🙂

I looked up Hardbites chips on the internet, and they look amazing! There are Hardbites chips cooked in avocado oil? Oh, I will have to try these!!

That company also makes root vegetable chips that are also quite good (but honestly, not as good as the potato chips!).

I currently have a “thing” for vintage English cheddar cheese. It’s firm and a little friable and it is moreish.

Rice cracker snacks are the best. Personally, I’m into chocolate covered raisins—that’s a fruit, so it’s healthy, right?

Yes–very, very healthy. Doctors are recommending chocolate covered raisins with a good splash of rum. 🙂

These do sound good for a salty treat. My current sweet faves are Bobo’s stuff’d oat bites. They are plant-based and oh so good with a cup of coffee!

I’ve not had these craclers, but they sound like they are worth looking for.
Right now, I can’t get enough of our fresh blueberries!

Yes! It’s blueberry season where we live now, and I want to get some next weekend for sure.

Sounds yummy, but individually packed?! Why are all snack food companies so heartless when it comes to plastic pollution? I think it would be easy to go back to wax paper or something like that, and NOT wrap things individually.

Ahh, yes. Good point.

Oh, sometimes I love and hate when I discover new edibles. I become addicted, and like yourself, look high, low, and sideways to have it again. And again. 😆 Right now, I’m just enjoying these cold herbal teas, sweetened with honey. I’d feel it’s safe but I’m drinking less water.

Those herbal teas sound refreshing! Cheers!
