Fridge on the Fritz is Gone!

Stainless steel refrigerator with water/ice options.

Icy puddles of refrigerator pee no longer take us by surprise each morning. We’ve finally done it: we’ve replaced the old fridge with a new one. For at least three years, we’ve reserved money in the budget to replace our incontinent appliance, but we’ve never used it. We just lived dangerously on the edge, saying things like, “It still works!” and “I stepped in it again!” and “Oh, how can we you hate you, you little dickens of a fridge?”

But then, Nate started to notice that maybe it was also beginning to fail in the “refrigeration” department. That is to say, it appeared that it would also give out altogether, so we finally got a new one.

I’d really love to tell you that we wrestled a heavy hunk of a refrigerator home and hooked it up and used all kinds of special tools and took a course in electrical engineering to make sure it worked correctly, but we totally phoned it in. And, I have to be extra-special nice to Nate because he dealt with all the horrors that were behind the original refrigerator.

I did try to get Nate to talk about what exactly was behind the refrigerator, but his eyes were distant, his face white. He mumbled something about being able to perhaps fashion together a medium-sized animal with what he found. I don’t even want to think about it.

Instead, here are some things I should have expected, but I didn’t really think about until they happened:

–We needed to clean out the old refrigerator the night before, which was when I discovered a few bottles of things beyond their expiration date, and I really hope I didn’t use any of those things while cooking, but if I did, the Fixin’ Leaks and Leeks Team is quite the sturdy bunch!

–The salvageable food in the refrigerator will find itself strewn about the countertops and/or tucked inside ice chests that are also on the countertops. And the whole thing kind of resembles a buffet where no one bothered to unwrap anything or make it look nice—but it is easier to see all available options when lunchtime arrives.

–The “buffet” sticks around long after the new refrigerator is in because it takes at least 24 hours for the refrigerator to reach optimal temperature.

But the payoff in the end is coming downstairs in the morning with confidence—without those galoshes MacGyvered from grippy socks and plastic wrap.

Your Turn: What are three things in your refrigerator right now?

    1. Thanks! Yes, it is surprising which condiments would spawn new things. For instance, we had a jar of olives in the old fridge that I think produced another one–but it was fuzzy and cloudy, so it was definitely time to get rid of that jar.

      1. I’m an essentials sort of girl. I could probably tell you everything in my fridge without looking at it…😆

  1. That new fridge looks great! We had a leaky fridge we put up with for quite a while until one day I snapped, texted Hubby, and said, “Meet us at Lowe’s. We’re getting a new fridge!” I’m very proud of that new fridge, too.

  2. What a beautiful new fridge! Our fridge decided to stop its activity about one month ago, so we too have a new one. But … after a couple of week the oven too dedided that it was too old and tired, so now we also have a new oven … and much less money 😉
