A riotous gaggle of leaves wouldn’t let me pass, unless I took a picture of them. So, I did. You always hear, “Look up if you want to see beautiful things,” but sometimes, you have to look down—often for practical reasons (dog doo, slugs that go squish)—but also because some very threatening fall leaves told you to. You see, they had dreams of being influencers on social media. Their plan was to get in on some exclusive Hickory Farms unboxings, so @hickoryfarms, if you’re reading this, please get these star-struck leaves off the street and into an unboxing video.
Looking down is also how you spot celebrities. At a farmer’s market, I caught a glimpse of Rick Steves’ hands, pants leg, and the back of his head. Nate actually spotted him first. He said, “It’s Rick Steves,”and because I was looking up at signs above tents and stores and such, I turned around too late. I just saw “some guy” who had dropped apples all over the ground and was picking them up.
“Yeah, thanks a lot, Nate,” I said, but he insisted, and when I finally traced the fallen apples to the hands, the khaki dress pants, the casual, yet collared shirt with a neatly tied sweater around the waist, I realized I had spotted the PBS travel guru himself. And I had nothing to say. Absolutely nothing.
In any case, the herd of beautiful, yet very demanding leaves at my feet saw others behind me on the trail and shooed me along. I snapped my picture and left, their crackling and fluttering building into a crescendo of “gift boxes that include sweet and smoky summer sausages” and “golden toasted crackers.” Oh, Hickory Farms! You’re in for heaps of fun.
Your Turn: What’s your favorite thing to photograph?
I’ll have to say mountains are my favorite thing to photograph.

They are amazing! When it’s not cloudy and rainy, we get some beautiful views here of the mountains.

Clouds are fun to capture, especially when you can try to guess the shapes. 🙂

Landscapes, but I have recently taken photos of those celebrity leaves, too.
I would love to see Rick Steves wear blue pants (or black, or grey, or green or … ).
