Burping is my superpower. Actually, finding a baby’s burp and getting it out in the open is my superpower. When Alex was born, I wasn’t the smoothest of diaper changers, and to this day, if anyone hands me a baby, I hold my arms out and tiptoe like I’ve been asked to step on a minefield.
But, when it comes to burping a baby, I tap lightly on the shoulder blades, move my hands around until I find the secret hollow where a burp lives, and press ever so slightly to release a most resoundingly satisfying burp that would make even alligators stand at attention and salute me.
So when my coworkers organized a baby shower with a “tea for two theme” and provided burp cloths to decorate, I was all in. The coworker organizing the whole thing also provided paints and the cutest stamps I’ve ever seen.

I chose purple and green paint and stamped out flower and leaf shapes. I even got compliments from a few people, but I think they were just being nice because the shapes didn’t quite show up for me. They came out as blobs of green and purple goo.
Perhaps the baby that will receive these burp cloths might find them…instructional? Yes. Instructional. These cloths appear to have already been vomited over in green and purple. So, welcome to the world, and choose your own adventure/color, baby!
In any case, this cloth is for that special newborn who will fill in the blank spaces with all kinds of unexpected colorful bits of whimsy and imagination.
Your Turn: Have you been to a baby shower lately? What are some fun activities you’ve done?
this was a great idea for a baby shower

“alligators stand at attention and salute me”–that was a brilliant visual. I think the cloth looks rather pretty. I HAVE been to a baby shower recently! There was a quiz of baby knowledge and I failed utterly! But the food was great. 🙂

Thanks! The quiz of baby knowledge sounds like lots of fun!

It was definitely unique. Hard questions! Wish I could remember some of them now…

I haven’t been to a baby shower in ages! The cloth is very pretty, I think.

I’ve been to only one baby shower back in the ’90s.

My coworkers are all younger, and getting married and having babies, so it has been a lot of fun being invited to work get-togethers.

Who wants to go to a baby shower when we get to read your account?! I’m still laughing…
never going to forget the alligators saluting you and also the hollow where the burp lives! 😄😄😂😂
I’ve never been to a baby shower of the US kind. Here, it’s a very traditional function though nowadays it’s changing, much to the disapproval of the older ladies.

Love your design! I haven’t been to a baby shower in decades but I’m sure the games haven’t changed much—does the mother to be still have to wear a hat with all the bows from the gifts on it?

Thanks so much! And as for the hat with all the bows from the gifts? I don’t know that tradition, but it sounds like fun!
