Floor Wine Review

Glass of white wine on a coffee table with two guitars and a leather chair in the background.

A sturdy variety of twist-off cap wines has earned the name “floor wine” in the Fixin’ Leaks and Leeks household. It’s not wine that will put you on the floor (though it could)—and it’s not wine we pour on the floor. It’s wine we store on the floor-level of the pantry. Here it is in a sentence:

“Hey, Nate! We need more of that floor wine.”

The floor wine “collection” started with reds, but I’ve added whites. And I like guessing what I’ll pair them with—without any help from experts or the internet.

Here’s what happened when I paired the Kirkland 2022 Marlborough Ti Point Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand with barbecue chicken on a sweet Hawaiian roll: nothing that I can remember.

The wine, by itself, is smooth, with citrus notes. It’s pretty good. With barbecue chicken on a Hawaiian roll, it tastes the same. The internet says you’re supposed to use a zinfandel—or some kind of red wine—with barbecue chicken, but sometimes, you just reach for whatever’s closest on the pantry floor.

I’ll have to add a twist-off cap zinfandel to my collection—and more barbecue sauce. But I suspect a glass of this sauvignon blanc would also taste amazing with:

–A truckload of white chocolate chip cookies

–A sheet-cake sized serving of meringue

–A smattering of perfume

–A pallet of cozy mystery novels

–A herd of snuggly cats or fluffy dogs

Your Turn: What’s your favorite food and beverage pairing? (alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages)

  1. Here in Italy we have very good wines, and each of them is good for specific food. In our family, we also lile French wines (like Sauvignon), that is very good with diferet food. Sorry, I’m not an expert
