Lunch lady lore screams a tale of mystery meat, smothered in a red sauce and running wild between two slices of what’s-an-expiration-date-anyway bread. And that tale is captured in my “sloppy joe” costume, which Alex made for me to wear during “spirit week” at work this Halloween.

All “joe mama” jokes aside, this mama will gallivant about at work in a sloppy joe costume.

Spirit week runs October 28-November 1, and there are themes for each day:

Monday=Evil

Tuesday=Tropical Tuesday

Wednesday=“Joe Day” (No one explained this—it’s open to interpretation.)

Thursday=Halloween

Friday=Any Holiday

No, we don’t have to participate. I’m not even sure if there’s a prize, but there might be. We work at a toy company, and we are making a mad dash to the holidays, so we might as well yuck it up with costumes. And I will do what it takes to bring it, but sewing, cutting on a straight line, making a burger or a costume—are not my forte. Alex, on the other hand, can whip up a festive sloppy joe/joe mama costume in no time.

Literally, he cut out burger shapes from cardboard—and hand-drew/painted in the rest. A delicate maze of string holds the whole thing together—and I fit snuggly inside.

There’s just one problem: Doors and narrow walkways. I have to walk sideways most of the time, or get my buns caught in awkward places—and I definitely can’t sit at my desk and type. But, I can extricate myself from the contraption—perhaps a limited amount of times—and jump-scare a french fry or two.

And that’s all that really matters.

What did the sloppy joe say to the french fry? Fry me to the moon, you spud-tacular-looking beast.

  2. “making a mad dash to the holidays”–Brilliant. “jump-scare a french fry or two.”–Excellent. So I’m guessing you’ll wear this on Wednesday, Joe Day? (My son would just dress as himself.) It is so, so handy having a good artist in the family. I have contracted my children’s services on multiple occasions.

  7. We went to a Brickfest ( for those obsessed with Lego ) at Bournemouth International Centre. I thought Lego nerds were even weirder than expected, but it turned out in another hall there was a convention for people who like to dress up as comic heroes!

  9. I’ll always respect a workplace that allows this much effort to be put into things during a spirit week. Some places hate having fun! But this workplace knows how to throw down and let people run around enjoying themselves. As for a costume, I’ve seen someone dress up as a giant ketchup bottle – perfectly fitting for the sloppy joe costume!
