Ships Ahoy! Cranberry-Orange Muffins for Your Crew

Two cranberry-orange muffins on a square red plate.

To all the scurvy pirates out there, I see you. I’ve baked you some muffins with an extra burst of vitamin C, me hearties! And, they’re super easy because they come from a box mix, which you could probably bring aboard a large vessel to avoid mutiny, but you’d probably bake them on shore and store them in barrels, where they would get rock hard and mutiny would run rampant anyway.

If you’re a mutiny-loving bunch (Aye!), bake up some orange-cranberry muffins from a box mix. Throw in extra ingredients not listed on the box, such as ¾ cup of orange juice and a teaspoon of dried orange peel. Also, if your sea provisions are lacking in non-strong-flavored oils (I only had olive), you can skip the part about adding a half cup of oil because you can add a little extra egg parts and orange juice.

Results: The Fixin’ Leaks n’ Leeks crew loved the bright burst of orange and festive cranberry notes in the mix. The batter was a little toasty on the outside, but super soft on the inside—just like we’d imagine a real pirate to be!

Serve these muffins with:

–A sea shanty

–A barrel of rum

–A speed boat

–Buckets of vanilla icing

–Treasure chests of Pirate’s Booty (the snack, you naughty crew!)

–A sea’s bounty of adventures, minus the vomiting

Your Turn: Have you ever altered the directions of a boxed baked goods mix? What did you do? How did it turn out?

  1. Those look delicious! I have frequently altered the directions on boxed mixes. I’ve definitely added things or thinned out mixtures if I wanted to do something different with them. One time I thinned out a cake mix (and added eggs) to make pancakes because I didn’t have any flour. Worked reasonably well. I’ve also used cake mixes to make cookies by adding eggs and butter. My kids liked them, so I would say that was a winner. 😊
