
Wish I could say Rudolph got lit and made these cookies, but he didn’t. I did. And I wasn’t lit. I can’t blame Rudolph, and I can’t blame booze. This is my best. And while it won’t win any baking challenges, it’s pretty good and festive and so, ho, ho, ho jolly. Not to mention, super fun to make.
All it takes is your favorite sugar cookie recipe and any and all sprinkles, frostings, or candies you might find in an elf’s toolshed—or your own workshop.
For my sugar cookies, I only made half the recipe because I didn’t want to get too carried away—like Rudolph, wink, wink, nudge, nudge:
½ cup of butter
½ + ¼ cup of powdered sugar
The rest of a mini container of butterscotch liquor (or vanilla extract—maybe a teaspoon or two?)
1 egg
¼ + 1 cup of flour
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp cream of tartar
Mix the butter, sugar, extract, and eggs in one bowl. Mix the flour, baking soda and cream of tartar in another. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and blend well. Refrigerate for a few hours.
Roll, cut into shapes, and bake at 375 for 7-8 minutes. Then, let your fancy take flight, like Rudolph, guiding the sleigh during a snowstorm of red and green sugar sprinkles.
Results: I didn’t have any reindeer-shaped cookie cutters, but Alex suggested a circle shape because Rudolph’s nose is a circle. (Brilliant work, Alex!) The butterscotch liquor really added nothing to the flavor of the sugar cookies, so vanilla extract will do. The sprinkles and frosting resulted in an extra sugar buzz.
Serve these cookies with:
–One wild sleigh ride—let the sprinkles fly.
–A trough of toys from Misfit Toys Island.
–A boot of beer.
–Your two front teeth.
–A Chipmunk’s Christmas Carol record set on repeat.
–Pillowcases stuffed with mittens.
–Extra-strength ibuprofen—for Rudolph, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
