Craft Alert: Make a Squishy

Clear rabbit squishy toy tucked inside the leaves of a fake plant in a pot.

Things that go squish in the night can be turned into a craft. I have proof because I have done this. Just now. The raw materials didn’t come from under the bed, though. They came from a box that looked like a whole mess of fun.

The box advertised mystery “Squishies,” which sounded enticing enough to me, but they also added “two steps” and “less than $10,” so I was sold.

Two pouches of goo and a mold come inside the box. I had to massage each pouch for 15 seconds and squeeze the goo into a cup that also comes with the box. What they didn’t include was someone to hold the cup while I squeezed. Luckily, Nate was nearby.

Then, you just stir the two goos together, and they look exactly the same: clear. Once well mixed, it goes right into the mold—for an HOUR!!!! That is a long time when you’re waiting on a mystery.

I waited and wondered: would it be an animal? A space creature? I was really hoping for a space creature.

The wait was torturous, but I finally ended up with a bunny rabbit—if you look really close—or it also looks like a space creature. Mostly, it looks like a gummy candy, and I love to squish it. A lot. Crafting is stressful.

My buddy probably needs a friend. One to turn to when the squishing gets to be too much.

Your Turn: Have you ever made a craft from a kit? How did it turn out?

  1. The only craft from a kit I’ve made is model aircraft when I was a boy. They never really turned out like the pictures on the box, but they were a fun way to spend holidays as a kid.

  2. I made a Venetian mask from a squishy mass that had to be poured into a mold. After it had dried, it looked and felt like porcelain. I then decorated that with feathers and paillets and used it as a prop for Mardi Gras in our jewelry department. I was a Visual Merchandiser back then and had a lot of fun with this one. The most expensive part of this project was my time spent.

    1. Ha! I know what you mean! This squishy kit is super easy–I really couldn’t mess it up–much. I’m just glad Nate was there to hold the cup, so I could pour–otherwise, there would be no result.
