Pumpkin Spice Burns So Good: Voodoo Ranger Atomic Pumpkin Beer

The Great Habanero just rose from the pumpkin patch and demanded a beer. That’s when the Voodoo Ranger Atomic Pumpkin Beer variety appeared. According to anonymous sources, Linus of the Peanuts gang was very confused. He shouted something about the Great Pumpkin not being what he expected at all before passing out.

I, however, am scary grateful. This New Belgium Brewing beer has everything: a festive light-orange color with a creamy foam top, a delightful pumpkin flavor, notes of sweet cinnamon and malt, an after-burn of a spicy pepper blend, and a wicked skeleton mascot.

Some reviewers online, however, are not so complimentary. They hate pumpkin spice. And they really hate getting burned by peppers. Also, some say their stomachs didn’t feel so good afterward.

Call me a blockhead, but I disagree. I once ate a tortilla chip that was dusted with a TON of ghost peppers. The food-dye-colored chip left my tongue blue, and I could taste nothing for days. This beer is far superior to that experience. My tongue remained a normal pinkish color, and my stomach didn’t hurt. It just wanted more beer.

But with what can you pair this spicy gem of a gourdgeous beverage? I’ve done an exhaustive search of about five articles online, and I don’t really see evidence that people are pairing this beer with food. (Good grief!) They’re just drinking it straight, so I’ll have to throw all caution to the pumpkin patch and come up with my own serving suggestions:

  • Pillowcases stuffed with cheese
  • Troughs of mildly pumpkin-spiced sausages
  • Painted rocks, fashioned from Charlie Brown’s tricks-or-treats haul
  • Linus’ security blanket
  • A five-layered cake made of candy corn
  • Popcorn balls crafted from the whispers of ghosts

  7. Many many points for “gourdgeous.” That beer sounds intriguing. I’ve never heard of one with an after burn. The potential of this also intrigues me: A five-layered cake made of candy corn. I think you should tackle that project next! 🙂
