Confection Perfection

This is a photo of a box of chocolates from the inside. The chocolate pieces are nestled inside individual paper cup wrappers. Some look like chocolate covered nut clusters. Some are round and covered in chocolate. Some are square and covered in chocolate. Both dark and milk chocolate varieties are represented.

If you leave chocolate on the pillow, like they do in fancy hotels, it will just get in your hair and make a mess—and the next thing you know, you’re freaking out because you’re not sure what’s on the back side of your pajamas. That’s not what chocolate is for. Skip the fancy presentation and just eat them straight out of the box, the way Nature intended.

I never really thought I had a favorite chocolate, until I remembered spending Easter in Tucson, Arizona. My grandmother would give up chocolate for Lent, but then she’d get a huge box for Easter—and it was always See’s Candies.

One year, we all went to a See’s near Grandma and Grandpa’s house, and my family chose the flavors of chocolate we wanted. Dad always did caramels and nuts—and those were my favorites as well.

This year, I found a box of See’s nuts and chews (caramels) for Easter—and I couldn’t wait to bring it home!

Me: Nate, Alex, these are SEE’S CANDIES!!

Nate:

Alex: Mmmm.

Me: I just got the nut and caramel ones because they’re my favorite.

Nate:

Alex: These are so good!

Me: I know. I’m glad we’re not allergic to nuts.

Nate:

Alex: Me, too! Nom, nom, nom, nom.

Me: Nom, nom, nom, nom.

Alex: Nom, nom, nom, nom.

Me: Nom, nom, nom, nom.

Nate: These are good…Why are you so excited, again?

To be fair, I’ve been threatening to bring home a box of See’s Candies for years, but it would have meant an extra trip to another store. This time, however, I found them all wrapped up for Easter at one of the stores where I normally shop. It was like a sign from Grandma. A chocolatey caramelly, nutty sign to throw fudge-filled eggs to the wind and sniff those bon-bon wrappers while they’re still in bloom.

The box is not gone yet. I’m savoring them, though I suspect Alex has been fueling his studies with a nibble here and there. Nate’s showing great restraint, but I see him eyeing that box on his way to work—I also see a few less for me each day.

They’re great all by themselves, but if you want, you can serve them with:

  • Marshmallow Peep shots
  • Meadows filled with fluffy bunnies
  • A comfy couch stuffed with clouds
  • Buckets of floofy cats
  • Treasure maps leading to every grandma’s secret stash of chocolate

Your Turn: Do you have a favorite brand of chocolate or candy you enjoy?

  1. I don’t have a favourite brand, but I’m fortunate to live somewhere with a very good chocolate maker. Their products are popular here and in many parts of Australia.

  2. What is my abiding memory of Mum bringing my new baby sister home? – After a home birth that went wrong and nearly dying in hospital, though of course I did not know that and told my teacher Mummy had gone to hospital with a bad back. – Her friend brought round a box of Black Magic and I had the orange cream.

We all have our chocolate memories.

  3. As soon as I finish sending this comment, I’m going to go steal a chocolate from our own box of See’s. (Spoiling dinner be darned!)

Also, I very much want this to be a thing: Marshmallow Peep shots

I would also like this: Meadows filled with fluffy bunnies

Absolutely this: Buckets of floofy cats.

I think you’ve just described my heaven with all of the above.

      1. That is one of my favorites as well–and Grandma’s. If I can’t have caramels, toffee, nuts–the whipped chocolate filling is nothing to scoff at. It’s a celebration for sure!

  4. Ah, interesting to see that brand here! I remember one of my Dad’s clients (Dad is a lawyer) who would often give a box of See’s Candies every Christmas. Fortunately, See’s now has branches in the Philippines (though Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and its chocolate-covered apples arrived first).

To answer your question, I find myself enjoying the chocolates from Japanese confectioner Meiji. Either the Dark Chocolate or Milk Chocolate would do.
