It’s Flamingo O’ Clock Somewhere

If you give a flamingo sangria, it will ask for shrimp and slap you across the face with its wing. So don’t give a flamingo sangria. Instead, celebrate flamingo o’ clock with a ka-honk, ka-honk and a clink, clink of the wine glasses.

On a warm day last week, the Fixin’ Leaks and Leeks Team decided to make a cool pitcher of sangria, but we didn’t have any pitchers. However, Total Wine (and fitness) had wine AND a flamingo pitcher I couldn’t resist.

To be fair to the flamingo, I should have probably filled the pitcher with chilled shrimp, but shouting, “Hey, everyone! I put shrimp in the wine!” would just lead to a revolt.

I’m not a huge fan of overly sweet sangrias, so I asked the Total Wine (and fitness) team to help me find a drier red wine, and they suggested the Ed Edmundo Cabernet from Argentina-Mendoza.

By itself, the wine tasted great. Lots of fruity, cherry flavor, but not sweet. Then, I added “Pink Lady” apple pieces, slices of oranges, a few lemon slices, and a few lime slices—and let it all hang out in the flamingo in the fridge for a few hours.

Results were refreshing—and the wine-soaked apples at the bottom of the pitcher were millions of times better than any prize at the bottom of a cereal box!

Serve this sangria with:

  • Buckets of pink cupcakes
  • Tickets to the zoo
  • A kiddie pool filled with shrimp
  • Carloads of balloons
  • T-shirts that say, “Wine Me Up, and I’ll Dance!”
  • Flocks of flamingos doing the Macarena

Your Turn: What’s your favorite impulse-buy?

  1. Super fun flamingo! Looks so delicate. Sangria seems the perfect pairing for the pitcher. I suddenly want shrimp. But I would also like these two: T-shirts that say, “Wine Me Up, and I’ll Dance!” and Flocks of flamingos doing the Macarena. I might see the second if I drank the full pitcher myself.

  2. Thanks for sharing your recipe. A nice summer sipper! Another wine that can work well for sangria is dry gewurtztraminer (there are good ones made in Washington). It has tropical fruit notes but isn’t a sweet wine and you can really control the flavour by what you add. Cheers. 🥂

  3. I find myself most impulsive when I enter a bakery. I usually go in with an idea of what I want, and then I see the display case and I impulsively buy extra things as well.

  4. It’s been ages I don’t have a glass of sangria and now I’m craving it.
Fan serving suggestions, first nice day that we can enjoy it outside I’ll try it😍😋
