Leafin’ letter-heads! The craft alarm is off the charts. Glue fumes and the glint of sharp scissors have set it off, and there’s only one way out: make a leaf topper for a pencil.
Actually, I have a collection of pens with cute little character heads on them: Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Woody from Toy Story, and a random plastic flower. There’s one lone pencil in the group, and I think it needs a topper, too, so in the spirit of fall, I made a felt leaf topper that took me no more than maybe five minutes to make.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A pencil
- Clear glue
- Sturdy paper
- Felt square the size of a sheet of paper
- Marker
- Scissors
- Googly eyes
- Tape
- Pattern for a maple leaf (I happened to have a maple leaf cookie cutter.)
Trace the maple leaf pattern onto a sturdy square of paper. Cut it out. Then trace that shape onto the felt and cut around it. Glue the felt shape to the sturdy paper shape. Add googly eyes for extra fun and tape the whole thing to the top of the pencil.
Pro-Tip: To make the fun last, never use the pencil. The leaf part will probably fall right off, since the whole thing hinges on a firm beleaf in adhesives.
Things you could write with your leaf-topper pencil, if the leaf stays on:
- A love letter to fall leaves that begins “My dearest ride or die…”
- Lists for cats to complete (i.e. judge at least fifteen people as they walk through the neighborhood, etc.)
- A bucket list for rebellious orcas (i.e. tear off ten boat rutters in the Canary Islands, etc.)
- Grocery lists for bears (honey, beer, blueberries, and Hot Pockets)
- Your fall activity wish list (drink one pumpkin beer, secure the leaf topper to the pencil five more times, eat an entire pie, order a chicken suit for Halloween)
