A swoon-worthy, “someone-give-her-a-sedative” costume idea called to me from my closet. And the craft alarm won’t stop screaming, even though I barely used a pair of sharp scissors.
The costume I put together was semi-inspired by old 1950s horror movies (or any other 1950s movie) where women screamed their heads off, and the “only” solutions offered were slaps across the face, drugs, or being “put out to pasture” (sent to the countryside to commune with nature and hallucinate).
I like the natural solution best, but nature doesn’t like me so much (sorry to all the plants I’ve killed). Therefore, I decided I would stick with fake nature, like plastic plant leaves to soothe the steady beast of social media/current news hysteria as best as I can. So that’s how I came up the idea of a “natural-looking” female hysteria-inspired costume.
To keep things simple, I just chose a green dress from my closet that I only wore once and some green leggings that I wear more times than probably legally allowed. Then, off to the crafts store I went to find lengths of leafy plastic fronds and a tiara with fake green jewels because…why the heck not?
To assemble the costume, I simply put on the dress and leggings, slapped the tiara on my head, and draped the plastic leaves around my shoulders and backside in interesting shapes and patterns. I only needed sharp scissors to cut the tags off the leafy things, so I don’t know why the craft alarm even needed to get involved, yet here we are.
But could I walk around in such an ensemble? Yes! It’s perfectly ambulatory-friendly and there’s a bonus rustling sound the leaves make when I walk, so that’s fun.
And if I feel like screaming my head off, I think people will give me a pass, especially if I’m also ringing doorbells and shouting, “Happy Halloween! Slaps or sedatives!”
Your Turn: Do you ever just put together new outfits /costumes from your closet? Or is it just me?
Back in my younger days.
