Sweaters won’t unravel themselves during a fall fest, so I’m cranking up the volume with a playlist that says, “Read the room, cardigans and sit this one out. Only sturdy cable-knits will do.” Like most life forms out there, when I see a fiery forest of golden and crimson leaves, I want to run my hands through the branches and hold as many leaves as I can while dancing wildly to a Pandora station that sort of kind of matches the mood, but really doesn’t, so it’ll just have to do. Until now. I’ve a curated sweater shredding list of tunes that make balls of yarn weep for the sweltering days of summer.
So here it is in no particular order:
Vision Blurred (Kaskade/Anabel Englund). This one starts with the words, “Wake me up, don’t wake me up.” These words speak to me because of Daylight Savings Time, and we just fell back, and I don’t want to wake up. So, yeah. I’m going for a literal interpretation here. But also, it’s a cool club hit that’s great for leaf-pile jumping because who rakes leaves without a theme song?
Mykonos (Fleet Foxes). It just has a fall feel to me.
Autumn Leaves (Nat King Cole).
Ghost of Stephen Foster (Squirrel Nut Zippers). Sometimes the ghosts from Halloween stick around. There’s nothing you can do but just play them a song and hope they don’t snag your sweater.
November Spawned a Monster (Morrissey). Where there are ghosts, there are monsters.
Jig Party (Natalie McMaster). Anything by Natalie McMaster makes me think of fall for some reason, so I always keep another sweater in the hopper for her.
Sweater Weather (The Neighborhood).
Whew! It’s like I’ve experienced a cardigan arrest after dancing to that playlist, but I’d do it all over again. Fall is fleeting and knit happens.
Your Turn: What are you listening to these days?
