Lai Lo Lai Lo Lai – Gipsy Kings!

This is a photo of a live concert of the Gipsy Kings band members on stage. They have their acoustic and electric guitars. Purple smoke/light hangs in the background against the night sky. It's an outdoor concert. Just the tops of people in the rows in front of the stage can be seen.

I just bamboleioed so hard, and I have no regrets. Nate took me to see the Gipsy Kings live at the Chateau St. Michelle estate/winery in Woodinville, Washington last weekend—and I still have so many thoughts:

  • The venue was amazeballs (beautiful gardens/charming estate), and the Gipsy Kings were incredible. They sound even better live than they do recorded, if that is even possible.
  • Wine stations!!! They had lots of places where you could buy bottles of wine. Guests are strongly encouraged to bring their own wine openers (there are restrictions on size) and plastic cups, but if you forget, they have everything covered. They also had slushie wine concoctions that looked really good.
  • The food truck options were kind of meh. Nate and I got tacos. The chicken had a delicious sauce with some kick, but the meat was dry. I loved the fresh lime and radish, though. The ice cream truck was to scream for. The salted caramel tasted like butterscotch pudding, and I would have volared away with it in a minute. Yum! (Next time, we might get take-out or fancy picnic fixings, but we’d save room for the ice cream truck.)
This is a photo of corn tortilla chicken tacos in a styrofoam box. There's a wedge of lime at the top. The tacos are saucy and topped with onion and radish. The box is set upon a wooden wine barrel "table." In the background you can see a picture of Chateau St. Michelle wine, two clear plastic glasses, and a carne asada steak bowl.
  • Shout-out to the woman who danced all night long like no one was watching, even venturing out into the crowd, snagging some unsuspecting man, and dancing with him, too. And Unsuspecting Man is a hero.
  • Shout-out to the conga line that formed spontaneously and fell apart around the middle section, row D or so.

We paid for seats that were just in front of the lawn, but we had a decent view of the stage. They were a bit spendy but worth it. If we had been in the lawn behind us, we probably wouldn’t have been able to see much.

But were the seats comfortable? No. However, if you’re in your seat the whole time during a Gipsy Kings concert, are you even a fan? The real fans are shamelessly swaying their backsides to and fro and clapping out of rhythm.

In any case, I’m all clapped and tapped out. It’s the closest thing to clubbing I’ll get these days. Yet, even while my drooping eyelids said no más, my feet said, djobi, djoba, toda la noche.

Your Turn: What’s the last concert you attended?

  1. The last concert I attended was in 1980. It was at the Noosa showgrounds on a Saturday afternoon and evening. There were multiple Australian rock bands. There was also a haze of marijuana smoke.
